When There's No One To Blame

Just read a news article about a head-on crash that happened locally. An older woman was driving along when her car crossed center and was struck head-on by a car carrying four teenagers. Both drivers died on impact.

The cause? Ice.

When I hear stories like that, it makes me so incredibly sad. It's almost like I want someone to be at fault, to blame. In this case, no one was speeding. No one was drunk or high. No one was driving recklessly. There is no one to blame. Accidents happen. Lives are lost. It's so scary that it makes me want to wrap my family in bubble wrap and keep them home, safe and sound.

My heart goes out to the families, and to the three teenagers now in critical condition at area hospitals. I'm going to give my kids extra tight hugs today.

  1. Heather, I'm coming up on the third anniversary of an accident that killed my cousin's husband and left her permanently brain damaged. They went out to get pizza. The weather was fine, the roads were clear. Patty was driving and she NEVER speeds. The driver of a car coming the other way suffered some sort of medical emergency, crossed the median, and hit them head-on. A truck behind them then t-boned them on the passenger side where my cousin's husband was sitting. He died at the scene. So did the other driver. Patty was in a coma for weeks.

You truly never know. Hugging your kids is always a good idea.

  2. Little twists of fate like this do make you want to give extra hugs and kisses before a family member leaves the house. You just never know.

  4. Oh, Annette, that brought tears to my eyes. So, so sad. And you and MC are right--we just don't know.

    Katie, I think that's one of the hardest parts--understanding. I know I don't...
