Last Saturday, my husband, son #2, and I toured Bowling Green State University, the first of many college tours planned over the next few months. It was "Junior" day at the college and the place was packed with wide-eyed eleventh graders getting their first glimpse at what college life might entail. They got to tour the whole campus including dorms (the dorm we toured was not good for anyone with the least bit of claustrophobia).
The school had a huge room set up in the student union with booths representing every major with advisors and professors standing by to answer questions. Some we bypassed immediately (East Asian Studies) and some had no one manning the booth, or people browsing it either (Math, statistics--big surprise there).
But what caught MY eye was the Pop Culture table. Pop. Culture. As a major. It almost makes me want to go back to school! It's perfect for me. Don't ask me what kind of career comes from a pop culture degree because I don't know. I didn't dare stop and linger at the booth for fear that I'd suddenly submit an application (which you could do on the spot, btw).
My son wasn't too interested in the pop culture booth (whose kid is he???). For him we stuck to the medical professions and the history department... The college is about three hours away from home, so a bit further than I'd like (couldn't he just live at home??? Is that too much to ask???), and has its pros and cons, but it's on The List. I've started keeping a notebook for all these visits. And I made a special note of the pop culture major--just in case son #2 changes his mind...
If you could go back to school right now, what major would you choose?
~Heather
I majored in sociology with a minor in math and if I went back to school, I would major in business administration.
ReplyDeleteWe didn't go on college tours when I was graduating from high school. I like to think if I did, I may have gone to another college if was offered a scholarship.
I did go back to school. But considering I did it solely with a view to getting OUT of retail, I don't think it counts as getting to pick what I *wanted* to do. My major is in Human Resources Management. But if I was 10 years younger and doing it all over and it wasn't strictly a job related issue? Then probably an English major followed by a Master's in Library Science.
ReplyDeleteA minor in math, Dru? Math??? That's impressive. I'm really surprised you didn't go the English route since you love books so much.
ReplyDeleteShel, are you still in school? That's impressive, too! It has to be hard to balance everything. I can definitely see you as an English major, and you'd be a wonderful librarian. Maybe in a couple of years... :)
well since I'm back in school, you know what I'm studying. I got my first degree in Athletic Training.
ReplyDeleteWell...I have a double major in Education and my masters in Special Education plus family therapy. NOTHING to do with writing. (did I say elementary education?!) AGAIN~nothing to do with writing.
ReplyDeleteI would go back and ADD on an English degree.
Katie, do you regret the first degree? Or glad you did it?
ReplyDeleteTonya, WOW!!!!!!! Wow, wow, wow, and wow (one for each major). That's incredible. You rock.
Heather, I have a little less than two years to go for this degree. I did look at changing it to English a few months ago, when I got seriously into the manuscript formatting thing; figuring authors might be more likely to hire someone with a more English-centered degree. But I decided changing schools and degree programs would set me back more than the potential gain. So, I'm plugging away (you saw my FB comment on Accounting 2, believe me, I'm busting out in hives too!), and hope that at least I'll be more marketable when this is done. The juggling isn't too bad right now, I only work part time, but some days it seems as if there aren't enough hours in the day.
ReplyDeletenope, don't regret it at all. Its still something I'd love to do, just not feasible with a young family. I learned a lot though :)
ReplyDeleteWay behind on blog reading, so I'm catching up... I have degrees in English, journalism and elementary education, and a minor in history. I once thought I wanted to be a teacher. HA HA HA. Not so much. I regret not majoring in library science. I know I should have been a librarian and I would've been a great one. Too late now. Too many student loans I'm already paying back, so I probably won't ever go back to school. I also harbor dreams of being a YA writer, but I'm too chicken to try!
ReplyDeleteMM, I hope you give writing a try--it's not as scary as it seems!
