Boston Cream Pie

This cake is the go-to birthday cake in my house. Three out of five of us have it every birthday (son #1 and I are the holdouts). I also make it every once in a while for family members' birthdays and special occasions.

Last week, it was my daughter's birthday, and she wanted a Boston Cream Pie (no idea why they call it a pie when it's a cake). I totally cheat when making the cake and buy Duncan Hines' butter recipe cake (I need to learn how to make this from scratch). The middle layer is made-from-scratch vanilla custard, and the top is an icing made of semisweet chocolate and butter melted in a double boiler. Doesn't it look yummy?

Do you have a favorite cake you always get on your birthday?

  2. That is so sweet that you do bake them a cake. How long does it take? What cake do you have on your birthday?

When I was younger I went for the traditional birthday cake: yellow cake with chocolate icing. As an adult, no one makes me a cake anymore so I settle for a cupcake from the bakery.

Which reminds me that I need to find a bakery around the new job.

    Have a good Wednesday.

  3. Heather, you really should put some sort of viewer warning on your blog when you're posting pictures of yummy food. Very cruel to those of us who are trying to diet. (whimper)

  6. Okay, next time I'll post warnings! Dru, I wish I lived closer to you--I'd make you a cake.

Me? Depends on my mood. Sometimes it's cheesecake, sometimes coconut cake, sometimes yellow cake/chocolate frosting... The last couple of years have seen pumpkin pie, which is somewhat hard to find in August. Mmmm.
