Four Weddings

Have any of you seen this reality show on TLC? I hadn't until this past weekend, when I stumbled across a mini marathon of it on Sunday morning. You all know how much I love reality shows--so I stopped, watched, and quickly realized this would be one reality show I'd never watch again.

The gist of the show is that it follows four brides on their wedding days. The brides must judge each other on several categories, including best dress, best venue, best food-all in a bid to win a dream honeymoon.

On the surface it doesn't seem like such a bad premise, and there are rules in place to prevent brides from completely trashing each other in scoring to make themselves look better, but there is still cattiness, still bad scoring, and one contestant on Sunday proclaimed, (I'm paraphrasing) "I would have scored her better, but a wedding should be about making your guests feel welcome and she didn't do that."

What? A wedding is about the guests? I think this is where my big issue comes in. To me a wedding isn't about the fanciest dress, the tastiest food, the reception hall. It's about the love, the gush, the goo--the romance. It's about the bride and groom--and solely about the bride and groom. I cringe to think about these brides looking back at their episode and hearing the nasty comments. It has to leave a bad taste--and possibly taint a wonderful memory, turning it bittersweet. I really feel rather sorry for them, though I suppose they knew what they were getting into.

So, I'd rather (gasp) turn the TV off than watch again. And you know that's saying something...

  1. When I had my big ole wedding, I did apologize to the guest before the wedding day. I said that it was my day and I was going to have fun so if I didn't take the time to walk around and talk to them it's b/c I was determined to make it all about me and the groom. Needless to say...I was sliding down the dance floor in my big wedding dress to Greese.
    I wouldn't watch that show either~BUT I'm a HUGE reality fan...my family hates it.

  2. Re. so called reality shows - I must be missing something. I don't see the appeal at all.

But we figured out the wedding thing. After doing the big traditional wedding the first time, my beloved spouse and I celebrated our 25th anniversary by doing it again. But our way. Exchanged our vows on his favorite golf course. I wore jeans and fancied-up tennies (and my original veil). Our sons gave me "back". It was all about love and friendship and fun. GUess which wedding I enjoyed more.

  3. How come when I scan the TV, I always find the shark shows or the crime shows? I actually prefer watching them anyway.

That show doesn't look like something I would watch.

  4. Tonya, I'd have loved to see you dancing to Grease! LOLOL!

"Gave me back" -- love that, Linda! Sounds like a great second wedding.

LOLOL, Dru! There are a lot of shark shows these days. And crime shows, too. There seems to always be a wedding show on TLC--do you get that channel?

  5. Heather, I get TLC but it's not part of my favorite channels so when I'm surfing, I never see it. I'll have to add it so I can see what I'm missing.

  6. Dru, you should definitely check out Say Yes to the Dress--usually some great feel-good stories with that show, but there are some occasional bridezillas, maidzillas, momzillas...

Such an interesting show to watch human nature at its finest.

  7. In preparing my wedding I wanted to make sure everyone had fun and spent a lot of money I didn't have to insure that. Funny thing was when it came time and I walked down the aisle I could have cared less if anyone was there or if they liked it or not. I was just happy with what I got at the end of the aisle.
