Scaredy Cat

I'm blogging today at The Naked Hero about facing writerly fears (rankings, royalties and rejections--oh my!).

The topic got me thinking about everyday kind of fears. Not the biggees (illness, psychos, accidents, things that go bump in the night, etc), but the little ones. Spiders, snakes, mushrooms. Those sorts of fears.

For me, centipedes rank up there. When one crawled out of my bathroom sink drain last week, I thought I might need to move--out of the house. I'm not fond of raw pork, either, though it's not so much a fear. It mostly gives me the heebie jeebies.

What are some of your everyday fears?

  1. I'll never forget the day that I locked myself out of my new apartment for 24 hours because I saw a creature with 4 tiny legs and a long tail and long whiskers that frightened the heck out of me. I made the maintenance crew opened up my door and search the entire apartment until they found said creature and later seal up any holes where it could enter.

I'll look down a bear or lion, but that nasty animal will bring me to tears.

  2. Oh gosh, Dru! Can't even say its name--can't say I blame you. I think I would have moved out, too. I'm okay with them in the wild (kind of) but not in MY house. :)

  4. Earwigs. Ack. They are a pox among bugs.
    Woodbugs, creepy dry skittering things.

  6. Tonya, that sucker can run, too! Shudder.

Hi Gaylin! Earwigs wig (ha-ha) me out too. Yuck, yuck, yuck!

Lisa, I like little lizards--from afar. But snakes. Ugh. No. No, no, no.

  7. Who knew is right! I had no clue there was an established fear of mushrooms!

Aryn, who had actually had a pet cornsnake named Josephine, but she died in 2007

  8. Heather, a common house centipede (as displayed in the picture) startled me quite badly one night. I turned on the water in the tub and, no lie, one of those FLEW out of the drain - it was literally airborne for a second.
I was so freaked out that after we'd washed him down the drain and closed it, I made my husband watch the drain while I showered.

I made him watch the closed drain ... to ensure the drowned centipede didn't get out.

Not my proudest moment. Yet, one I am willing to share with you because even if you are not an "oh, ick a bug" kind of girl those damn things will creep you out.

  9. Aryn, you're braver than I? A pet snake--I don't think so!

Aimee, they are SO creepy. You're brave, too--I wouldn't have gotten in that shower for days--even with a lookout. :) So. Creepy. Ugh. (I'm shuddering.)
