The Breakfast, the Good News, and the Big Mistake

The Breakfast

Last week Baby Girl had to be at school an hour early to take a test, which meant that son # 2 would have to get to school an hour early as well, because it makes no sense whatsoever to drop BG off, then go home and get son #2 and drive him back (half hour round trip). SO...I thought this would be the perfect time to spend a little quality time with son #2 who has just four days left of high school and less than two weeks till graduation. We dropped off BG at school and went to breakfast. It was so nice that I wished I thought of doing this kind of thing with the kids a long time ago. I’m going to have to implement it with BG as she heads into her junior year (sob)—though soon enough she’ll be driving me around. This is an interesting time in my life. Kids flying the coop left and right. And though I’m so excited to see where they go in life, what they become, and the families they’ll have...my life is changing drastically. I’m trying to go with the flow, but I’ll be honest—I also want to grab onto them and hold tight.

The Good News

Hooray! All three Lucy Valentine books are going to be published in Turkey! How cool is that? I cannot wait to see how the foreign editions turn out (Germany and Indonesia are also pubbing Truly, Madly), and to see the covers, too. Fun! I received an email a couple of weeks ago from the woman who’s doing the German translation of Truly, Madly. She had a question about a certain passage in the book, and it made me realize just how wonky the English language can be—especially with dialogue. I couldn’t help but think what a great job she has, though. Something Baby Girl is very interested in pursuing someday—I think she’d do a great job with it, too. She loves languages... (But trying not to think of her being off on her own [see above]—OHHHMMM.)

The Big Mistake

Last week son #2 had a couple of track meets (two more this week, too). One of my favorite things (besides watching him run) at these meets is the concession stand. I love soft pretzels and nachos and snow cones and all the assorted junk food that comes along with these kinds of events. Well, last Friday I ordered the nachos. Absolutely delicious. The chips were fresh, the cheese hot. Then...an hour after eating them my stomach started to ache. And ache some more. Ugh. Ugh, ugh, ugh. Not fun. I might never eat nachos again... But if the meets this week have snow cones, I’m all over that. You’d think I’d learn my lesson, but noooo—we’re talking snow cones! Some stomach aches are just worth it.

*What’s your favorite concession food? And what’re you reading now?*

  1. I know exactly how you feel about this stage in life! Hurrah on the good book news! I think you're safe with snow cones... those can't go bad, right? I'm guessing the cheese was bad. But that experience also wouldn't stop me from enjoying concession food! (My fave is salty soft pretzels with the nacho cheese and a soda.)

  2. Sharon, we can get through our emptying nests together! Thank goodness for support systems.

I honestly don't think anyone can go wrong with a snow cone. Love them. Esp. the blue and green ones. YUM. Right now, never want to see a nacho again... Give me time. :)

  3. I love the salty pretzels and Coke. I used to love popcorn with lots of butter, until popcorn stopped loving me back. Makes my belly hurt, hurt, hurt.

Reading Carpe Bead'em and soooo loving it. Seriously, thinking about getting on my bead on this week.

  4. Congrats on the new book translations. I'd love to see them put out in Hebrew. It would give me a chance to really work on my language skills with something worth reading.

  5. I ate too much artichoke dip yesterday and paid for it with an hour of pain. Sorry to hear you suffered with the nachos.

I'm reading Shades of Milk and Honey by Mary Robinette Kowal. It's like a Jane Austen novel, only there's magic. I really like the magic.

  6. My nephew and his wife just went through the empting nest thing when their only daughter flew the coop. So much of my niece-in-law's(?) life had revolved around by grandniece that she and my nephew are having to learn to be a couple again.

I haven't been to a consession stand in a lot of years, but I used to love the pretzels.

I just finished reading Leann Sweeney's Yellow Rose Mysteries series and now I'm in the middle of Jennifer Stanley's Hope Street Church Mysteries series.

  7. Congrats on the good news - you're global!
Snow cones..yikes I haven't had one of those in years. Maybe this is the summer. Fave concession food - chestnuts (as in roasting on an open fire.) Even the burnt ones.

  8. LisaD, I love buttery popcorn, too, but can't eat too much. Same reason! But I do love it. Mmmm.

Nora, I wish I had a say in it, but I don't. We can cross fingers!

I'm a fan of the magic, too, Melody. And I've been known to overeat dip too. It's just so darn good.

Lynda, the empty nest thing is kind of freaking me out, but I know we'll get through it okay. Well, I hope we get through it okay! Gulp.

Hi Rosemary! Thanks--being global is fun. If I ever see chestnuts at a concession stand I'll have to try them--have never had one. This is the issue when nachos and snow cones are my standard choice. LOL.

  9. Soft pretzels! Ideally, with a little mustard to dip them in, but I'm not picky. Here in Texas we have little snow cone shacks all over town ... like the coffee shacks in the Pacific NW. I do love a good snow cone, and here the weather often demands them.

Kudos on the translation! That's excellent news!

Oh, and reading ... I'm reading another Denise Mina right now. Highly recommended.

  10. A plain hot pretzel, twizzlers or Mr. Softie vanilla soft ice cream cone covered with rainbow sprinkles.

Congrats Heather on being global. You do know that Global is "in."

I'm reading Pumped For Murder by Elaine Viets.

  11. My favorite concession stand food are funnel cakes! I hadn't had one in years until last weekend. They are so yummy. If funnel cakes aren't available I'll take the nachos, but now after reading your story I'll probably re-think them :(

I am reading Ellery Adams "Deadly Cliche." I just love Captain Havilland!

  12. I don't eat much concession food, but I love soft pretzels with mustard and a diet coke.

right now I am reading Rotten to the Core by Sheila Connolly.
I love Mary Kay Andrews, not sure if I have read Hissy Fit, will have to look to see what it is about :) A problem when you read book after book and sometimes several at a time. :)
