Bowling, Anyone?

I was watching a little bit of the World Series of Bowling yesterday (I lead a scintillating life) on ESPN. It's one of those sports that I watch, utterly fascinated, that people can make a living (a good one, too) by bowling. The pros make it look so easy.

I'd be in the poorhouse if I ever tried to make a living from it. I haven't bowled in years but when I did, it wasn't pretty. Hello, gutter. The balls are too heavy for me, and I've never been too good with hand eye coordination.

Back in Massachusetts (and various parts of New England/Canada) there's Candlepin bowling. I still wonder why it hasn't caught on across the entire US. It's much more fun. The balls are the size of grapefruits and the pins are a lot skinnier. If I can do well at it, anyone can.

After watching that tournament yesterday, I think I need to brush up on my bowling skills (as long as I can bring my own shoes). Who's with me? After all, the leader had a lifetime earnings of 2.9 million... That's a lot of incentive!

  1. NOT a good bowler!! Not even on the online pogo bowling game. My kids cringe when I tell them I want to go.

  2. I'm not a bowler, but I do okay on the Wii, well I get less gutter balls than when I first started.

  4. Hey Heather, if you ever want lessons I am a certified bowling coach. Been doing it since I was a small kid. Won a few tournaments and my average is about 225 right now in the Wednesday night league that I sub in. The Ohio Women's State tournament is in Cincinnati next year. I can let you know the details and you can come cheer us on. :-)

  5. Once upon a time, I bowled all the time. Mommy league in the morning (free kidcare at the lanes), couples league at night, midnight starlight bowling on Saturdays. You know my favorite part... handicaps! Teams loved having someone like me to keep their handicap up. (And I did.)

  6. Just recently I told my husband we should go bowling. It has been at least a decade since I've gone, and I am not that good at it at all, but every time I've gone I've had fun. So, we have not made it yet for our bowling date, but we will make it there sometime in the next couple of weeks. Your blog reminded me that I need to schedule in the bowling time!

  7. I am a terrible bowler. I would consistently swing my arm back to get ready and the ball would fly out of my arm toward the people watching rather than let me bring it forward again for the release! HAD I KNOWN so much money was involved I may have tried much harder!

  8. My son was watching the bowling with me, and he said if Wii had pro bowling, he'd be a millionaire. LOL!

I've also been researching college scholarships and there are many for teen bowlers (I don't think Wii counts)! Who knew???

  9. I got a few scholarships for school through bowling. It didn't cover everything but it helped.
